Bachelor Degree Maritime Electrical Engineering

General information

Licenciatura em Engenharia Eletrotecnica Maritma

In the last decades, world trade has increased considerably in size and complexity and there has been an increase in the number and size of the fleet and the appearance of new types of merchant ships. The changes introduced in STCW Manila 2010 aim to train specialized personnel to deal with new types of ships. New education, training and assessment programs have been established in view of the increasing complexity of onboard electrical and electronic technology and the instrumentation, automation, control and computerization systems that have invaded the modern design of ships. It is in this context that the category of Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) is created whose training and certification must comply with Section A-III / 6 of the STCW (mandatory minimum requirements for the certification of electrotechnical officers).

The degree course in Marine Electrical Engineering aims to provide the minimum knowledge required for the certification of the electrotechnical officer, which allows him to be responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical installations of ships and associated systems.

The course aims to provide students with skills in the following areas:

  • main propulsion system of the vessel;
  • systems for the production and distribution of electric power in LV or MV;
  • BT and MT electrical panels;
  • electrical safety systems including lifeboats, winches, lighting, etc.
  • ship automation system;
  • electrical systems in the rooms, including kitchens and laundries;
  • auxiliary navigation systems;
  • internal and external communication systems.

Venue: ENIDH - Escola Superior Nautica Infante D. Enrique
Paço de Arcos, Portugal

Escola Superior Náutica Infante D. Henrique (ENIDH) is the only Portuguese Maritime College and is located at Paço de Arcos, near Lisbon, Portugal. The College's mission statement is "educating and training officers for the Merchant Marine as well as other maritime related activities, such as port management and transportation and logistics". ENIDH has modern facilities which include several classrooms, laboratories and simulators, an indoor swimming pool, diving tank, row tank and a gymnasium. Other facilities include a canteen for students, teachers and staff personnel and a residence hall for 100 students. Nowadays, the school has approximately 60 teachers and about 700 students. About 40% of the teachers are marine officers that come to shore after some years of activity in the merchant fleet. ENIDH belongs to the Portuguese public higher education network and is under supervision of the Ministry of Education and Science. The College is certified by the Portuguese Maritime Administration and in 2008 implemented a quality management system which is certified by SGS. (ISO 9001:2008). The application of Bologna Declaration principles to all courses is a clear indicator of ENIDH's capacity to position itself as a European higher education institution.
