Curso de Atualização em Segurança Básica

The Basic Safety Update course is intended for individuals who hold a Qualification Certificate in Basic Security issued after January 1, 2002, and who wish to revalidate their certificate, to ensure the continuity of their competences.

Basic Security courses and certificates are mandatory for working on board of ship and other vessels under the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

The STCW Convention is an international convention:

  • It is a treaty of the conditions which seafarers must meet before they can carry out their duties on board commercial vessels;
  • It is a fundamental instrument for the safeguarding of human life at sea and the promotion and guarantee of living and working conditions on board;
  • It establishes the set of minimum requirements that seafarers must meet in terms of training and certification, extending their scope to suitability for service, in particular by establishing minimum hours of rest, always focusing on the dual safety, operational and occupational perspective ;
  • It covers all work carried out on board ships in a variety of functions, including special care for certain types of ships and particular attention to emergency, occupational safety, health and medical care, and survival functions.



Attending this course it is intended that the students have guaranteed the continuity of the capacities of:  

  • Survive at sea in case of abandonment of the ship;  
  • Minimize the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire;
  • Fight and extinguish fires.

Cost: 90 euros


1. Have a Basic Security Qualification Certificate issued to seafarers after January 1, 2002;

2. Have at least 12 months on-board experience in the last 5 years or 3 months of on-board shipment in the last six months immediately prior to revalidation, in: 

  • Commercial ships, or  
  • Fishing vessel registered in inshore or offshore fishing,
  • or Ship of local passenger traffic or tugboat,
  • or  In the case of non-seafarers, on board passenger ships (long haul). 

3. Have a medical certificate for seafarers, in accordance with current legislation.

Academic level: Lifelong Learning


The evaluation of the students (on a scale of 0 to 20 values) will have three components:

i. Final evaluation of each module, which includes continuous assessment, on learning and tests;

ii. Proof of Professional Aptitude Performance (PDAP) - theoretical test;

iii. Assiduity not less than 90%, and attendance at the practical sessions of the modules will have to be 100%.
